Primorsko, Bulgaria - general information, rich photo gallery, pictures, photo albums

Primorsko

Centre of Youth tourism.

Primorsko is a climatic town-resort and a centre for youth tourism. It is situated 6 km north of the village of Kiten, 52 km south of Bourgas and 422 km southeast of the capital Sofia. The attractive resort rises on the peninsula between the spacious beaches of the Stomoplo and Dyavolski bays. Here the coziness of the Strandzha mountain forests and hills, climbing down to the sea, is combined with the expanse of the seascape and the freshness of the air. The town has two sandy beaches. The northern is more open and offers rough sea, which makes it treasured by surfers, while the southern is smaller and calmer, and hence preferred by families. This resort is known as a place which is preferred by young Bulgarians who come here and stay in the numerous rest homes, hostels, student dorms and campgrounds. Here is the so called International Youth Resort Centre (IYRC), which still attracts thousands of young people. The youth centre is situated only 1-2 km to the south of the town and represents a typical holiday city for young people with plenty of villas, bungalows, hotels, bars, discos, and various sports grounds. The centre was built in socialist times in a bid to promote interaction among youngsters from Soviet Bloc countries. In 1998 Primorsko was awarded the prestigeous Blue Flag by the Foundation for Environmental Education in Europe - recognition of the purity of the nature in its region.

Relief

Primorsko is first described as an unique combination of hilly and low mountainous relief, indented by picturesque river valleys and various coast forms and second as an unique combination of sea and broad-leaved oak and beech forest. The total area of the beaches comes up to about 1 square km, half of which is occupied by protected dunes. The average altitude above sea level is 16 meters.
Through the surroundings of the town the Ropotamo River and the Devilish River pass. The Devilish River receives its waters from the Devilish Lake whose level is below sea. The homonymous bay forming the river and the lake has firth features, namely swamps covered with reed and crimson. The Ropotamo River is formed through joining of two small rivers-the Tserovska and the Rosenska. In its lower stream the Ropotamo overflows its banks at a width of 30-50 metres.

Climate

The climate of the region is Continental-Mediterranean and this is a precondition for a warm and sunny summer with refreshing daytime breeze and relatively high night temperatures. The combination of high atmospheric pressure, humidity and temperature of the air is very favourable. From April till October sunny weather predominates. The duration of the day is 13 to 15 hours. The sun is active from 8 to 11 hours a day. Average temperature for July - 23-24 degrees Centigrade. The maximum temperatures rarely exceed 32-33 degrees Centigrade.

Places of interest

The Thracian sanctuary Beglic Tash has been discovered in 2003. This is the earliest megalithic sanctuary all over the Southeast Thracia and the Black sea cost. The archaeological excavations have proved that life and rituals have started here at the end of The Late Bronze Age (about XIII century BC). The sanctuary consists of central area and many small structures around it. The big rocks have been partially worked up and assembled. The big stones have been arranged in unique to the age way. In the flat parts of the rocks have been cut down circles, wash tubs and Marko's steps. The dwelling and the ritual fireplaces are parts of big ancient religious complex.
The excavations started in 2003. The whole place was cleared from the trees and bushes. At the beginning of the exploration it was proved that Beglik Tash was a Thracian sanctuary and had been used for more than a millennium, from XIV c. BC to IV c. AD. During the excavation the ruins of the medieval church St. Paraskeva were studied as well. In October 2004 the excavation continued in the central area of the sanctuary and at the same time we started exploring a new region north of it. Here for the first time has been discovered that Beglik Tash was a big ritual compound with service buildings and a big built-up area.

Maslen Nos Cape rises about 5 km northeast of Primorsko. It is the easternmost point of the Strandzha Mountain. The origin of the name goes back to an ancient legend about the commercial ship, carrying amphoras full of olive oil shipwrecking here. The rocky and steep cape (with a big lighthouse) has been declared a natural landmark. There is an easier access from the south, where there is a port. At random places, the multitude of under and above water rocks make up wondrous fiords, while the curious eyes of tourists are surprised to also find cozy quiet little bays, covered by stones and mussel shells.

Ropotamo reserve is one of the largest natural reserves of Bulgaria. There can be seen rocky phenomena such as Lion Head and Dragon House. This reserve is world famous for its rare birds and plants, that can be found only here. Ropotamo reserve includes some smaller reserves: Vodni lilii (The Water Lilies), Zmiiski ostrov (The Snakes' Island), Arkoutino and Morski pelin ( The Sea Wormwood).

Sand Dunes Perla

North of Primorsko, in the zone between the Stamopolu lagoon and the beach, is situated one of the best preserved sand dunes regions along the Black sea coast. The highest dune ridges reach 19m and are exclusively fascinating view for all visitors of Primorsko. This is "Sand Dunes-Perla". There is a large number of specific sand (psammophite) kinds of plants. Eighty plant kinds have been found among the dunes. Fourteen of them are included in the Red Book of Bulgaria, which concerns endangered animal and vegetation species. Big is the diversity of invertebrates, rare and endangered amphibian species, reptiles and mammals.
