
Billion euro invested in Bulgaria's infrastructure projects

Bulgaria will invest 5.5 billion euro in infrastructure projects by the end of its mandate in 2009, Regional Development and Public Works Minister Assen Gagauzov said. The investment was included in the national strategy for integrated development of infrastructure from 2006 to 2015, Bulgarian news agency BTA said. Preliminary data showed that construction sector formed more than six per cent of Bulgaria's GDP in 2006.More than 1625km of roads were constructed, re-constructed or rehabilitated in 2006. The projects' worth exceeded 342 million euro. Trakia and Maritsa highways will be finished by the end of the Cabinet's mandate. Lyulin highway will be ready in three years, BTA said.
European Investment Bank (EIB) will grant Bulgaria a loan for the construction or re-habilitation of 153km of roads by 2010. Nearly 300 million euro will be invested in second and third-class roads under the Regional Development Operational Programme of the Regional Development and Public Works Ministry.
