Bourgas port Terminal 2A to be unveiled in February
Dnevnik Daily, 2006-01-27
The newly-built Terminal 2A at the Port of Bourgas will be fully equipped by the end of February, said Argir Boyadjiev, head of the state-owned port operator. A series of final trials remains to be conducted before the terminal is launched.
Terminal 2A was built under a large-scale project for the expansion of the port implemented on a loan from the Japanese government.
The port operator managers should deposit within a month with the transport ministry a development program for the port targeting an increase in the handled cargo volume. The managers should also prepare an investment plan.
The ongoing construction of the port's bulk terminal is due for completion this summer.
To round up the port's reconstruction, its approach channel should be deepened to 15 meters, allowing vessels with up to 120,000 tons cargo to use the port. The improvements, which were initially part of the port's expansion project, have been estimated to cost $35 mln. Of these, the Bulgarian government will provide 20 mln levs. A timetable for subcontractor tenders has been prepared. The dredging operations, which should be completed by the end of 2007, are expected to boost the volume of cargo delivered to the port's biggest client, the Kremikovtsi steel works.
Cargo traffic dropped 3,2% (186,000 tons) in 2005 year-on-year, the port operator managers said, citing the poor business performance of major industrial clients. In 2005 the port handled 3.2 mln tons of incoming cargo and 2.4 mln tons of outgoing cargo.
