Concert Kicks Off Sofia 2014 Olympic Week

GamesBids.com, 2006-06-16

A major free outdoor concert in downtown Sofia kick’s off a week of planned Olympic activities promoting Sofia’s bid for the 2014 Winter Olympic Games.
Organized under the banner of “Sofia 2014. We are Together”, the concert takes place Sunday June 18 from 7-10 p.m in front of one of Sofia’s landmark buildings, the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral.
Vesela Letcheva, President of the State Agency for Youth and Sports said, “this will be a wonderful celebration of youth, sport and music. The support of our music industry and our major artists will enable us to promote our bid to a whole new audience.
Mean while Bulgaria’s Prime Minister Sergey Stanishev said after being briefed by bid officials on the current status of the bid, “the bid for the 2014 Olympic Games is an item of the highest importance, not just for Sofia, but for all of Bulgaria”.
He said he was fully behind the bid and was doing everything possible to promote Sofia’s 2014 bid internationally over the next 12 months. “The government will also provide all the support necessary to our bid committee for the development of the bid plans and completion of the candidature file”, said the Prime Minister.
When asked about the strong points of Sofia’s bid Stanishev said, “firstly the bid has the complete support of the government and the Bulgarian people. This is the first step and it is already in place. Secondly Sofia is the only capital city involved in the 2014 bid. The Games will benefit from the significantly higher level of infrastructure and services that only a national capital city can provide ad can be assured of the support of a national government. Thirdly, our mountain resorts of Borovets and Bansko are the primary areas for tourism investment and development in this country. The infrastructure, accommodation and other services available there are of a world class standard”.
