
EU directive changes to have positive effect on Bulgaria's tourism-Humphreys

Consumer protection in tourism will improve after some changes in European Timeshare Directive, head of the European Commission (EC) representation in Bulgaria, Michael Humphreys said.Timeshare Directive regulates the right to spend a period of time in a holiday property for a certain period of the year for three years or longer. Bulgarian European commissioner for consumer protection Meglena Kouneva proposed the directive changes, which aim at better protection of the consumers. Humphreys said that economic benefits from such property usage exceed ten billion euro annually.
Bulgaria has well developed tourism market and Timeshare Directive will be attractive for the business in the country, he said. The new amendments will allow consumers sign short-term contracts for a period of up to three years. The directive amendments will also regulate the usage of other property like boats and caravan.
EC will discuss the amendments in 2008. The Council of the European Union will also have to approve the changes. After the approval they will become part of the national legislation of EU countries.
