Sofia tourist facilities report 30 per cent occupancy rate
propertywisebulgaria.com, 2008-01-26
The average occupancy rate last year for all Sofia's accommodation - everything from five-star hotels through to guest rooms - was 30 per cent according to data provided by the municipal company Tourist Services. The introduction of the one-lev tourist fee generated 1.29 million leva in revenues last year, a two per cent rise on 2006. Dividing the proceeds by the capital's total bed capacity - estimated to be about 13 000 - shows that every bed was occupied for an average 100-day period last year.
Hotels account for about 100 of the 260 accommodation facilities in Sofia. A total of 69 new accommodation facilities have opened in the capital over the last two years, including 23 hotels.
Official data suggests that some hotels are underreporting their bookings, according to hoteliers' representatives. Bed capacity is up but tourist fee revenues are virtually static, noted Stoyan Lazarov, director of Tourist Services.
The municipal company reported 712 000 hotel bookings made by foreigners in January-November 2007, down from 721 000 a year earlier. Bookings by Bulgarians rose to 541 000 from 435 000.
