Two ski lift rides, part of the Berkovski Balkan project, to be developed in 2008

     Berkovitsa has seen the construction of 20 small hotels over the past few years.The first two ski lift lines within the Berkovski Balkan project will be developed in 2008 and the existing ski piste will be extended, Berkovitsa municipality mayor Milcho Dotsov said in an interview with BTA news agency.
     The project envisages construction of winter tourism facilities, hotels, restaurants and roads bound for Berkovitsa and the area below Mount Kom. Berkovitsa has seen the construction of 20 small hotels over the past few years. In 2007 alone, the municipality has attracted 6 million leva for projects, financed by EU funds and the government, which translates into a 50 per cent hike as compared to 2006, Dotsov said.
     Unemployment in the region stands at 15 per cent, which remains above the country's average. 400 new jobs were created during the municipality's previous term of office. Glavbolgarstroy Jsc, Geotechmin Ltd, Elatsite med and Naftimpex were among the investors.
