USA Today: Bulgaria Among Few European Destinations to Offer Value Vacations
novinite.com, 2008-06-25
Bulgaria as one of the few countries in Europe where it would still be possible for Americans to get good value and enjoy their summer vacation despite high ticket prices and the strong EUR, according to the US daily publication "US Today".The article mentions that Bulgaria is the continent's oldest state and the birthplace of an ancient society that produced some of antiquity's finest gold artifacts, a country offering both white-sand beaches and snow-capped mountains.
The US publication explains that Bulgaria, while being the EU's newest member (along with Romania) is also a post-communist country in transition, which often means lack of infrastructure in rural areas and of good customer service at some places, but visitors would surely enjoy great food, beautiful nature and sea resorts on a budget that could not be found in other countries.
Further in the article, Kristine Dimitrova, a Bulgarian born Boston lawyer who often travels to the country, recommends visiting Sofia, one of the mountain regions, the ancient city of Plovdiv, and the Black Sea resort of Varna.
"Sofia is like a combination of New York, London, and Italy - it has ultra modern stores, phenomenal food, and lively entertainment," says Dimitrova.
The mountains, which are a few hours' drive from Sofia, offer warm welcome in country guesthouses and the possibility to see locals still using traditional farming and craft-making methods.
According to Dimitrova, Plovdiv is the cultural capital of the country, "really a place to get a sense of ancient Bulgaria."
"In the Old Town, you'll see lots of Greek and Roman ruins, including a large Greek amphitheater, as well as a good sample of period Bulgarian villas," Dimitrova says.
"Varna is essentially a major destination beach resort for all of Western Europe," she further continues. "It has natural hot mineral springs and modern spas with all the amenities and treatments you'd find in other places, but for a lot less, and an excellent Archaeological Museum with a display of intricately made Thracian gold jewelry from the 4th century B.C. and 100,000-year-old stone tools."
The publication also offers trip planning advice such as staying at an apartment hotel instead of at the many western hotel brands to be found in all major Bulgarian cities along with flight, rental car information and road information.
