     The town of Balchik is a relatively large settlement along the Northern seaside, situated 31 km. North of Varna, 37 km. south-east of Dobrich and 500 km. East from Sofia. Its population is 13 890 and Balchik is small full of romance Bulgarian seaside resort with great historical heritage. After the end of the Balkan War in 1913, it was annexed to the territory of Romania. Struck by the natural beauty of the place, The Romanian Queen Maria built a summer palace and a botanical garden there and turned into a big tourist attraction The town was included in Bulgarian territory after 1940. The Garden: Arranged in 1924-1936 is on the project of the French garden designer Jules Janine. It comprises more than 200 tree species, numerous flowers, boasting of an unique collection of cactus plants (more than 250 species). Balchik port is among the three biggest Bulgarian Black Sea ports, so one way to get there is by sea. There is regular bus transport to the nearby town of Dobrich, Varna and the Albena resort.
