Berkovitsa is typical Bulgarian mountain town situated at the foot of Stara Planina (Old Mountain). It is located 89 km way from the capital of Bulgaria - Sofia with its international airport. The road and railway connections with the biggest and most important city in Bulgaria are at very good level.
     The earliest archeological signs of dwellers in this area are from 4 century AD. During the Second Bulgarian kingdom when the youngest of Asenovtsi (Bulgarian ruling dynasty) -Kaloyan was on the throne, Berkovitsa was important fortification and military camp, for the Bulgarian armies in their campaigns against the Byzantines and crusaders. In the years of Turkish Yoke the town was important fairground. After 1878 ( the year of Bulgarian liberation) the settlement lost its trade significance. It attracts several prominent Bulgarians who live here. From this period there are several magnificent houses which have to be visited - Sarbinska house, Krasteva house and the house - museum of the most famous Bulgarian writer Ivan Vazov.
     Today Berkovitsa starts its development as mountain resort. At the Kom summit, which is located straight above the city, there is a good ski slope with the necessary facilities. The plans of the local authority are to construct several new ski pistes equipped with everything needed. The strategy also envisages extension of the existing sleeping base and building of new accommodations. Improvement of infrastructure will also be implemented, aiming increase of tourists.
