Berkovitsa is attractive mountain settlement located at the foot of Stara Planina. It has perfect transport connections with the capital of Bulgaria - Sofia, just 89 km. away. There are regular buses and railway.
     The town of Berkovitsa is considered to be an old settlement. The archeological excavations have shown the presence of the Romans here. The town is strongly connected with the name of Bulgarian ruler Tsar Kaloyan (1197 - 1207). His invincible armies used the strong Berkovitsa fortress as military camp and gather point in their successful campaigns against the Byzantines and the western crusaders of Baldwin and Henry-emperors of the Latin empire. In the years of the Turkish Yoke people from northwest Bulgaria gather on the local fair. After the liberation the most famous Bulgarian writer Ivan Vazov lived here. His house which is a masterpiece of Bulgarian renaissance architecture is opened for visitors in all seasons. Other houses from this period that deserve seeing are Krasteva and Sabriska.      The present of this area is connected with its establishment as ski destination. At the moment there is good ski slope at Kom summit (2016 m. above sea level). The strategy of the local authority is to construct several new pistes with all the necessary facilities, to expand the accommodation base and to improve infrastructure.
