Berkovitsa is small Bulgarian town at the foot of Western Stara Planina (Old Mountain). It is 89 km . away from the capital city of Sofia. The communication with sofia and the rest of the country are very good via asphalt - paved road and railway.
     The historians consider that the history of Berkovitsa starts in 4 century AD. From this period are the ruins of Roman fortification and Christian church. In the year of the reign of prominent Bulgarian ruler tsar Kaloyan (1197 -1207), the settlement is important fortress and military camp. In the tears of Turkish Yoke here is organized one of the biggest fairs in Bulgaria. After the liberation this town is home and working place of the most famous Bulgarian novelist Ivan Vazov.
     Today Berkovitsa is on its way to develop as ski resort. At the moment there is very good ski slope at Kom summit (the highest in Western Stara Planina).
