Berkovitsa is nice mountain town at the foot of Western Stara Planina (Old Mountain). It is an old settlement, which is witnessed by the remains of church and Roman fortification, found during excavations in the area Kaleto. In the history of Bulgarian state Berkovitsa is known since the reign of tsar Kaloyan. During the Turkish Yoke the settlement is important trade center. After the liberation of Bulgaria Ivan Vazov (the most famous Bulgarian writer) spends several years of his life here.
