Berkovitsa is town situated at the foot of north slopes of Western Stara Planina (Old mountain). It is 89 km. away from the capital of Bulgaria -Sofia and its international airport. The connections with Sofia are very good via railway and road.
     The most ancient signs of civilization on this place are from 4 century AD. The archeologists have discovered remains of Roman fortification and church. After the liberation of Bulgaria the most prominent Bulgarian writer Ivan Vazov lives and works here as judge in the local courthouse. His house - museum, carrying the spirit of 19 century is opened for tourists and visitors all the year round.
     The present and the future of Berkovitsa are connected with its establishment as ski center. At the moment the ski slope at the high Kom summit offers good conditions to skiers and snowboarders. The municipality envisages construction of several new pistes with all the necessary facilities and good accommodation base. There will also be significant improvement in infrastructure of the region.
