Berkovitsa is situated at the foot of north slopes of western Stara Planina mountain range. It is less than an hour drive from the capital of Bulgaria - Sofia (89 km away) and its international airport. The communications from and to Sofia are very good. There is regular railway and good asphalt -paved road.
     The town of Berkovits is considered to be an old settlement. This is proved by the archeological finds. The town has been fortress during the dynasty of Asenovtsi. Later on during the Turkish Yoke it became a fairground for people of northwest Bulgaria. After the liberation Berkovitsa lost part of its significance as commercial center. However it was attractive living place to prominent Bulgarians, amongst which is the most famous Bulgarian novelist Ivan Vazov.
     There are several interesting monuments in Berkovitsa: the house - museum of Ivan Vazov, the clock tower from the 1762, the ruins of Roman fortification and church from 4 century AD, the churches "The wholly virgin" and "St. Nikola" , and the monastery (10 km away from Berkovits) "St Ciril and Metodius" - an impressive monument from the Second Bulgarian kingdom.
     At the present the town is attractive to tourists who go skiing on the slope of Kom summit, situated just above the city. There is project for the development of the region as ski center. The municipality plans to construct several new pistes, good accommodation base, all the necessary facilities and better infrastructure. The expectations are this area to become one of the most visited winter places.
