The liberation movement is very strong in Lovech, as it is one of the bases of Vasil Levski - most prominent Bulgarian revolutionary.
Today town has about 50 000 inhabitants and keeps its role as one of leading Fore - Balkan towns. It is known as the town of lilacs, because of numerous lilac bushes in its parks. There are interesting places to visit - the covered bridge (wonderful masterpiece of famous Bulgarian architect Kolyu Ficheto), Varosha district, fascinating with its preserved style and architecture, local historic museum - one of the riches in Bulgaria, exhibiting archeological finds from Perperikon and Tatul. The fortress of Hisarya, which is 20 km. away, is a place to visit. It impresses with its well preserved Roman fortification walls.
